• THE PLOT

    'Dying to Learn' (DTL) is a journey through the day-in-the-life activities of an 11th grade math class. The student interactions are certainly drama-filled, but they seem, sadly, fairly ordinary. Until, a single event escalates a consistent feud. Days later, the students are trapped in class as an active shooter terrorizes the campus. While the students hunker in terror, they vigorously argue about their conditions. The room is rife with fear, rage and tears that becomes blame thrown, protocol challenged and discoveries made. Through it all, the looming question cannot be avoided: will they make it out alive?

Episodic series 10 episodes telling the story of Dhoruba Bin Wahad was a leading member of the New York Black Panther Party, a Field Secretary of the BPP responsible for organizing chapters throughout the East Coast, and a member of the Panther 21. Arrested in June 1971, he was framed as part of the illegal FBI Counter Intelligence Program (COINTELPRO) and subjected to unfair treatment and torture during his nineteen years in prison.

In 1984, a rapping craze exploded onto the streets of Detroit. Leroy J. Barrett III, equipped with poetry writing skills, scrappily forged into the flourishing rhyme battle arena as Flyboy Roy. Flyboy quickly ran into neighborhood veterans Rodney Hall (Rappin’ Clever Rod) and Anthony Lockhart (Tone Marone). Rod and Tone were microphone warriors who reveled in embarrassing anyone foolish enough to rhyme in front of them. A myriad of impromptu musical confrontations between these three rappers led to creating the local legendary battling group: The Eveready Crew.

Their embattled backstory is a microcosm of their city. Detroit was rife with hungry emcees all over town, each rhyming for their stake in street cred and respect. Beat boxers rocked the neighborhoods as rap battles rapidly broke out everywhere. You could find a human amphitheater surrounding an emcee challenge at any time, in any location, outdoors or indoors, on the east side or the west. Eveready was often in the center of those crowds.

The ‘Crew extended their brand by assembling and managing several groups in their name. These groups helped invade and overpower rap shows citywide. This tight-knit posse earned so many tested victories that they built a high level of prestige for their name.   • ABOUT THE "LEARNING TO LIVE" BOOK SERIES

    School shootings are murdering our children and we must protect our kids!

    I wrote the film ‘Dying to Learn’ to illustrate some of the daily challenges and pressures our young people face, both before and during an active shooter situation while they’re in school. DTL also diagrams more of the causes for mass school shootings than the media is brave enough to tackle. The typical media response narratives only cover guns, bullying and mental health whenever we face these murderous tragedies. This violent pandemic is vastly more broad than those items and there’s much more accountability to be assigned. If we are to effectively protect our children, then we must start at the beginning to find every means and give every effort to save our daughters and sons.

    Following the principles of problem solving, ‘Dying to Learn’ has inspired the Learning to Live book series. These books first acknowledge that there is a problem then takes a deep dive into a dozen of the causes and attempts to find resolution. Assuredly, It will take a massive concerted and lengthy effort to turn schools back into sanctuaries again for our children. This is a complex issue that requires sober minds, honest tongues and robust commitment. There is nothing more worthy of our commitment than protecting kids, this moment demands that we rise now. The Learning to Live series challenges us to take the first step in the right direction by suggesting we should all First: Love.
